Description

The Outlander Lodge is true to its name: this is a unique experience for fans of the historical Outlander drama to live the dream.

When you step in to Well Court, where this magical apartment is to be found, you really are stepping back in Scottish history. This one bedroomed, top floor apartment evokes all the romance and adventure of The Outlander series which, along with the history of this area, was the inspiration for the captivating interior.

With its attic feel, this apartment is ideal for honeymooners or couples looking for a very romantic stay in Edinburgh. The interiors combine curiosities of a bygone Jacobite age with oodles of modern day luxury.

A Pandora of delights is revealed behind each old style studded door. By climbing in to the hand built box bed with velvet drapes, old converted railway lamps, and leaded stained glass, not to mention the full wall mural showing Edinburgh's Old Town, you will feel as if you have been transported back in time. Open the window on to the leafy Water of Leith to hear the calming sounds of the river meandering by.

Original features have been retained in the open plan living space, including the stone walls, exposed beams, and a large feature fireplace. Please note the fireplace is ornamental and not to be lit in any circumstance.

There is a lavish dining area in the window recess, with opulent velvet and theatrical curtains, vaulted ceiling, and a view through the astragals windows over the ancient rooftops and the Water of Leith.

Open plan to the lounge, you will find a hand-built kitchen reminiscent of bygone times but with modern day necessities discreetly tucked away, including a dishwasher, oven, microwave, and fridge with freezer compartment. There is also a utility cupboard off the hall with a washer dryer. The shower room retains traditional features with its coombed ceiling and exposed beams, while the fittings are contemporary, with a powerful shower fitted within a wet floor area under the eaves, underfloor heating, and glamorous glass mosaic tiles.

Location

The Outlander Lodge enjoys a prime position in historic Well Court, the jewel in the crown of Dean Village, a picturesque and tranquil green oasis less than a 10 minute walk from Princes Street.

The apartment is located on the top floor of this historic Grade 1 listed building. Its famous turrets and spires sit beautifully by the Water of Leith, reached both by Stockbridge as well as by the magical Water of Leith path.

Nothing can quite prepare you for entering under the striking arches of this old cobbled courtyard, which was recently restored to its former glory with the help of Edinburgh World Heritage. As you walk through the courtyard and past the old clock tower, look out for the mill stones and carved stone plaques depicting pies and baked bread, a reminder of the area's milling past.

Well Court was commissioned in the 1880s by a former wealthy proprietor of the Scotsman newspaper as model housing in the Arts and Crafts style. He enforced strict behavioural rules and the clock tower was reputedly built as a reminder that residents could be locked out if they came back home too late. Thankfully, with so many eateries and bars in the West End less than five minutes' walk away, such rules are no longer enforced.

In the morning, although you might find it difficult to leave this magical apartment, the leafy view will eventually tempt you out. Follow the walkway along the Water of Leith and you will come to the impressive Dean Bridge designed by Thomas Telford. For culture lovers, the classical buildings of the Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery are just a short walk away, while Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street are also in easy strolling distance.

The dining area overlooks the Water of Leith and the local area, Stockbridge, is plentifully stocked with enticing restaurants right on your doorstep. It is a bustling and vibrant neighbourhood, with fascinating wee shops and winding cobbled streets.
